General Motors VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) wrong key, missing key, or erratic operation

Restore starting on your GM when the VATS pellet key or reader circuit is the problem.

Vehicle Won’t Start? Your GM’s VATS System Might Be the Reason

If your GM uses the VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) black-pellet key and the vehicle suddenly will not start, the pellet-reading circuit may be preventing crank and/or fuel enable, depending on the application. An incorrect key read can trigger a lockout for about 3–4 minutes, and repeated attempts can restart that delay.

How the VATS Bypass Module Helps

The VATS Bypass Module simulates a valid pellet resistor value so the vehicle’s VATS circuit sees the correct resistance. It is a targeted fix for the pellet/resistor portion of older GM VATS systems. It is not a mechanical key replacement and not a PCM reprogram.

What’s in the Kit

  • VATS bypass module with 15 selectable resistor/key values
  • Solder (1 tube)
  • Heat shrink (assorted sizes)
  • Wire ties (pack)
  • Complete printed instructions and switch-setting chart

Who This Is For

  • Owners who lost their original VATS key
  • Vehicles with worn or corroded pellet/key readers that read intermittently
  • DIYers and shops looking for an alternative to replacing locks or paying dealer fees

How to Install and Set Up

Basic wiring and soldering skills are required. Follow the printed instructions carefully and observe the VATS reset delay when testing settings.

1. If You Can Measure the Key’s Resistor Value

  • Measure the pellet resistance with a multimeter and consult the included switch-setting chart.
  • Set the DIP switches to the matching value before finalizing wiring.

2. If You Cannot Measure the Key Value (Trial Method)

  • Install the module into the VATS circuit as shown in the instructions.
  • Test DIP-switch positions one at a time.
  • After each attempt, allow the VATS system to reset for about 3–4 minutes before trying the next setting.
  • If the VATS resistor circuit is the issue, the vehicle should start once the correct setting is found.
  • After confirming the correct setting, secure the wiring with the supplied heat shrink and ties.

Quick Safety Tips

  • Disconnect the battery before soldering wiring connections.
  • Label wires before disconnecting anything to avoid miswiring.
  • If you are not comfortable soldering, have a professional complete the installation.

Key Specs, Limitations, and Troubleshooting

  • Scope: Bypasses the VATS pellet/resistor detection only. A properly cut mechanical key is still required to turn the ignition.
  • Not compatible with: Vehicles that use separate transponder immobilizers or non-GM anti-theft systems.
  • Troubleshooting: If the vehicle still will not start after finding the correct switch setting, verify wiring continuity, ground connections, and that the vehicle actually uses the GM black-pellet VATS system.

Ready to Fix It Yourself?

Skip the locksmith and dealer wait times. The VATS Bypass Module is a practical way to restore starting when the pellet reader fails or the original key is lost.

Final Note

Before you buy: Confirm your vehicle uses the GM VATS black-pellet key system and that your year/model appears in the product fitment.
