How to identify 1993-2002 Camaro and Firebird Engines and Transmissions

VIN engine code:

The 8th digit from the left on the VIN is the engine code.

  • S - 3.4L V6
  • K - 3800 V6
  • P - 5.7 V8 (LT1) (1997 and earlier)
  • G - 5.7 V8 (LS1) (1998 and later)

Service Parts Identification Label:
This label is located on the glove box door. It list the VIN, paint code, options, and other specific information about the vehicle.

Identify the engine by the engine label:

  • 3.4L - The number is located just above the water pump on the front of the engine block. Also may be located on the lower left side of the engine block below the exhaust manifold. Also may be located lower left side of the engine block on a casting to the rear of the manifold
  • 3800 - The number is located on a sticker below the coil pack. Also on a pad on the left rear side on a casting to the rear of the manifold.
  • 3800 (2000) - The front sticker is located below the water pump
  • 3800 (2001-2002) - The sticker is below the air conditioner compressor.
  • V8 - The number are located on the lower left side of the block, just above the oil pan rail. And, on the left rear side of the block on a casting to the rear of the manifold.

Automatic Transmission Number:

  • 1993-1999 - The 4L60-E Transmission has the ID number stamped in the casting, on the right rear corner of the housing.
  • 2000-2002 - The 4L60-E Transmission has the ID number stamped on the left side of the case above the oil pan.

Manual Transmission number:

  • 5-Speed - The ID number/name plate is located on the left side of the case.
  • 6-Speed - The ID number/name plate is located on the left side of the case.
