1990-92 Chevy GMC GM Speedometer Circuit Board Repair Service

In 1990 through 1992 General Motors used a different speedometer set up than the prior or later years for many Chevy, GMC, and other GM named brands. The circuit board that drives the speedometer& odometer motors is located in the gauge cluster housing. 

Here is a picture of one of these speedometer circuit boards. The odometer plug does vary, so yours may look slightly different than this one.

A few years ago we started offering this repair service for 1990-92 Camaro's. As we had more and more customers calling and asking if we could offer this service for their non-Camaro vehicles, we decided to expand this service to other model GM vehicles.

It is now fairly common for these circuit boards to fail. Typical symptoms range from the speedometer not working at all, to it working intermittently or jumping around. Diagnosing the problem can be tricky if you don't have the equipment or knowledge to do the proper testing.

There are many post on the internet describing replacing a resistor or capacitor to do the repair. Sometimes this does fix the problem. Of recent weeks we have had several circuit board sent in for our speedometer circuit board repair service that have had repair attempts made by the owner. On several of these circuit boards we have seen new replaced resistors burned and burned circuit board traces. After seeing these very damaged boards come in for repair we would like to provide some information that may help the hobbyist mechanic with these repairs.

1. De-solder all the resistors and replace them with new ones.
2. De-solder all the capacitors and replace them with new ones.
3. De-solder the crystal oscillator and check it for proper operating frequency and voltage range at frequency (low and high voltage), and resistance.
4. Check resistance of all traces and contact points before reassembling.
5. Remove and check Integrated circuits, when needed, and replace with donor IC's when available.
